GRAW according to bit-tech.net March 4, 2006

As we get closer to the release date of Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (aka GR3) and an impending demo release the team at bit-tech.net has their preview of what to expect from the much anticipated Ubisoft release.

If there was one thing the graphical menu has missing,
we’d say it’s weather effects. Across the range of
levels we played, there was a notable absence
of rain, snow, sand or dust blowing across the level

there are a number of single and multiplayer game
types for you to engage in, from the standard
team-based objective-centric multiplayer,
to a large single player campaign and everything
in between. There are 12 single player
levels (each with a number of sub-campaigns)

Interestingly they go on to compare both the Xbox 360 version and the PC version which besides the fact that they run on the same graphics engine are extremely different. The PC version will be entirely first person and the Xbox 360 will have an over the shoulder 3rd person view.

Shooters on the horizon in 2006 January 31, 2006

IGN has listed its most anticipated shooters scheduled to be released in 2006 here. Mind you most of these are major studio releases with massive budgets and lots of backing for promotional campaigning so the opinionated comments they make must be taken with a grain of salt.

  • Call of Juarez:
“Set in the iconic world of the nineteenth century American West.

“Call of Juarez will feature a Counter-Strike style multiplayer
with two teams of players battling it out across
a variety of maps. There will even be some cool
historical scenarios that will let players take on
the roles of Jesse James, Wyatt Earp or Billy the Kid.”

  • Commandos Strike Force:
“Players will take command of three World War 2
operatives — the combat-oriented Green Beret, the
sneaky Spy and the deadly Sniper. Each of the
three operatives has unique strengths and weaknesses
that will determine just how you approach
the unique tactical situations during the game. ”
  • Enemy Territory: Quake Wars:
“Quake Wars lets players take charge of either the Strogg
or the Earth Defense Force as they battle it out over
a variety of locations — from deserts to tundra
to forests. The two sides of the battle mean there will
be two wildly different playing styles. The Earth forces
will rely on more conventional military equipment and
classes while the Strogg will have their own unique, hi-tech gadgets.”
  • Huxley:
“will let up to 5,000 players jump into a single world
to shoot it out with each other. In this case that world
is a post-apocalyptic world of two competing mutant races”

“There are two large cities, one each for the two main races
that serve as markets and rest areas for the soldiers
of each side. When you’re ready to battle, you can hop
onto a transport and find yourself in a richly detailed
battlefield with over 100 other players.”

  • Medal of Honor: Airborne:
“Campaigns will lead players through Sicily in
Operation Husky, into Normandy in the hours
before D-Day and across the Rhine as Allied Forces
make their way into the heart of Germany. One of the
more interesting features in the new game is that players
will start each mission in the air and will be able to steer
their parachute enough to land pretty much wherever
they like in the mission zone. Rather than relying on
linear levels, each mission area is wide open, giving the
players nearly complete freedom to determine how
they approach each objective. ”
  • Prey:
“The Doom-powered graphics for this game just completely blew us away.
The player navigates the innards of massive, living spaceship,
encountering a diverse array of other organisms who
have taken up residence inside the alien’s body. The whole thing
is creepy as hell and undeniably eye-catching.”
  • Sin Episodes:
“Powered by the Source Engine, the episodes will evolve
as the engine evolves, looking better and better each
time Valve implements new features. Another cool
feature is that the game will adjust to the player’s
actions. If you start using lots of headshots, the enemies
will start wearing helmets. If you start blasting too
many barrels, enemies will learn to steer clear.”
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl:
“S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is more than just another shooter.
Players will be able to roam around the 30km area
of the meltdown, fighting mutated monsters, bargaining
with merchants, infiltrating military bases and basically
trying to steer clear of the weird physical anomalies”
  • Time Shift:
“The player is in command of the Quantum Suit,
a suit that allows him to manipulate time”

“Apart from using the ability to stop, slow or rewind time
to handle shootouts with enemies, there are plenty
of environmental puzzles and challenges that require
the player to use the timeshifting ability to solve”

  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter:
“The new game takes the action to Mexico City where
the Ghosts will battle renegade soldiers
in a series of intense urban combats.
All the classic moves of the previous games are going
to be in place here — on the fly tactical commands,
dynamic lean and crouch poses — as well as a few new ones.
Players will now be able to run and slide, either on
their stomach or back, to reach cover. Making use of the
futuristic Integrated Warfighter System, the player will also
have access to loads of information that helps their
tactical planning. An overhead map lets players see, in
full 3D, the location of all friendly and known hostile forces.”
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Lockdown:
“The wide variety of weapons you’ll have access to can
be upgraded thanks to an extensive rail system,
adding new sights, scopes, suppressors and so forth.
There are plenty of tangos to cap in each level and the
levels are much longer this time around.”
  • Ubersoldier:
“ale of a genetically modified supersoldier who has
been brought back from the dead to fight again. ”
  • Unreal Tounament 2007:
“The basic setup of the matches will remain largely
unchanged but the gang at Epic has decided to rebalance
the weapons while also addressing the need
to get players to the battle sooner”
  • Battlefield 2: Armored Fury:
“takes place in the good ole’ U.S. of A. The Chinese
and MEC (Middle Eastern Coalition) will be
fighting the United States on its home turf”

“Armored Fury is scheduled to release with three maps,
one of which will have you fighting with tanks on
the freeway, which sounds pretty darned awesome
right there. The other two will put us in rural
Pennsylvania and the coast of Alaska, where
the Chinese will be attempting to establish a beachhead”

  • Battlefield 2: Euro Force:
“Like the name implies, EF will add a few European
military outfits, as well as more vehicles, weapons and maps”
  • Half-Life 2: Aftermath:
“Word on the street is that Aftermath will flesh out
the side characters, like Barney, Alyx, and Dog,
and it will involve escaping from City 17 in the
wake of the destruction of the Combine citadel”
  • SWAT 4: The Stechkov Syndicate:
“The player limit has also been increased from five to ten,
allowing two teams instead of just one.
Oh, and there’s also competitive, objective-based
multiplayer, time bonuses for non-lethal multiplayer
defeats, and a host of other details”

Insurgency mod for HL2 December 18, 2005

Fumbling through the pages of PC Gamer’s holiday 2005 issue (#144) I stumbled upon the mod section which revealed to me the development of a modern infantry combat mod for Half-Life 2 called Insurgency.

The mod is currently done with accepting beta testing applicants and is expected to be released in the late summer/early fall of 2006. Insurgency which will be known as INS is hoping to:

“simulate the challenges of infantry combat on the modern battlefield” “Advance through the chain of command as you gain online combat experience that opens opportunities to command a fireteam, squad/section, or even your entire platoon. It will take strategic skill and teamwork to overcome the challenging online opponents during battles set in real and fictional locations around the globe.”

So far the conflicts will be taking place in Croatia (Yugoslav National Army-JNA vs. Croatian Army/Hrvatska Vojska-HV) or in Iraq (United States Marine Corps-USMC, British Paras, Fedayeen Saddam-Republican Guards, and Iraqi Insurgents) and four game types will be available to choose from:

Firefight — Designed for up to 16 players. This is a duel between a Fireteam vs. Fireteam or a Squad vs. Squad. They must advance through the map and take the subsequent objectives. Reinforcement comes further back which could hinder an advance. Once a team has taken all objectives or eliminated the opposing team, they are victorious. The players then swap sides to prove is the best all around.

Battle — Designed for up to 64 players. Both teams clash as they struggle to control all the objectives. Depending on how well the team performs, the battle could easily put you on the defensive or if you execute your strategy and tactics well, you will be on the offensive to close with and destroy the enemy. In order to earn victory, you must control all objectives or eliminate the enemy once they have no more reinforcements available.

Push — Designed for up to 64 players. One team is on the offensive and the other must put up a stalwart effort in order to hold their ground. The objectives are layed out so that one at a time must be captured. Once that objective has been taken, the attacking team then continues on to the subsequent objectives until all have been taken or run out of troops and reinforcements.

Strike — Designed for up to 64 players. Another attack and defend scenario where objectives are layed out with no place for the defenders to withdraw and regroup. They must hold the objective as until either team can no longer put up a fight.

PC Gamer calls this mod “a gritty, dangerous, slow-paced re-creation of infantry combat” so don’t expect a frenzy of spray and pray gameplay as tactics are essential to survival.

What has defintely piqued my interest is the:

No Bullshit Heads Up Display (NOBSHUD) — Only the information that you need to know will be displayed when you need to know it. You will know where your objectives and where your leaders are at all times. No flashy graphics or other distractions to take your attention away from the action at hand.

which means that no crosshairs will be onscreen littering your field of vision as you will be forced to use the iron sights on your rifle while you duck in and out of cover.

Respawning will be done in waves of reinforcements (set to the “Platoon Commander”/server admin’s discretion:

Dynamic Map Configuration System — This feature allows server-sided changes to the configuration of maps. There is the ability to change what teams are fighting, which uniforms, reinforcement numbers, fire support available, squad configuration, among other properties.

Goddamn this looks good, (especially because its free).

Stay tuned.

While everyone knows coffee makes you more alert/wired and is a must for any serious gamer an alternative has surfaced for a while from the makers of Jolt Cola as they have created a mint flavoured caffeine energy gum. Two pieces of gum, they claim, is the equivalent of one cup of coffee:

“Jolt chewing gum contains caffeine
PLUS Guarana and Ginseng to give you maximum energy”

they even found a military purpose:

“The first thing we did was send
about 25,000 free packs of Jolt Gum overseas”

Who knows it may give you that edge you’ve been looking for during your endless hours of online combat.

Back on December 1st an irc dev chat took place giving a little more details on what GR3: Adavanced Warfighter has in store for us fellow gamers:

“In singleplayer and coop you will fight up to 20 enemy AI, plus both air and ground vehicles”

“A demo is scheduled for release in the beginning of 2006, before the release of the full game”

“GRAW will support Pixel Shader 3.0, and effects like HDR (High Dynamic Range). “Yes, and for the record: We were the first company to release a game with pixel shaders in. we know these kinds of features like the back of our hands. GRAW PC features HDR lighting, soft shadows, deferred lighting, normal mapping on everything, and an incredibly dynamic and destructable environment”

“There is no player switching in the single player mode; if you die, you die”

“Coop is one of the main focuses for GRAW PC. The tactical approach is balanced with coop in mind”

” On the game engine: “It’s our own Diesel Engine, version 6.0. It’s a next-gen engine that we’ve developed over time in collaboration with nVidia, ATI and also of late Ageia to support the latest and greatest PC hardware features”

“light and color changes to clearly indicate the mood of a scene. Before a fight, things look smooth, but as the bullets start flying and things get dangerous, the light changes to a more cold and “hard” hue. We use that in game as well, to emphasize the situation”

“Dead bodies will remain on screen, and not disappear after some time elapses”

“Content art, sound, technology and gameplay is entirely unique for the PC version. The entire PC version is made exclusively for the PC, and stand alone from the console versions in terms of gameplay. I’ll go a bit further on this…First off: The tactical layer of the PC game is much more advanced than the console approach. We have a realtime 3d view of the battle field where you as a squad leader can see the action and plan it real time. This to be able to set up the best tactical approach as the combat and pre combat changes. Adding to this we have individual control of 3 team mates and other support troops. This is to design complex flanking and attacking patterns both on the fly and through your tactical interface…for both stealth, position in covers and shooting positions. This is what we call the advanced leaning system which allows 8 way leaing, sliding and even diving into cover”
